It has great potential, but then so do plenty of places in Russia itself that they haven't bothered to develop.
The more important issue is that conceding on this would mean surrendering their status as a great power.

The people there are primarily Russian speakers. They didn't consent to the Maidan coup back in 2014. If they want to return to the Fatherland, then who is Zelenskyy to stand in their way?

It's the best agricultural land in the country, it's full of self identified russians, it's where most of the heavy industry is, it's where most of the mineral wealth is as well as natural gas deposits, it's also coastal which is solid gold for russia, they need warm water ports. they won't be satisfied with this though, they'll take at least kharkov, nikolaev, and odessa too

I don't know, anon. They could've easily just evacuated every Russian speaker in those regions aside from Crimea and further reinforced Crimea's annexation. Then when Ukraine attacked, they could claim that it's Ukraine who is the aggressor which would make sending the Ukies aid way more difficult for Western countries.

Crimea is Russia's only warmwater port. Losing Crimea has massive economic and military implications for them.
Those territories help secure Crimea and are conveniently russian-speaking. Theh also have tons of industry and resources. Also in general that land is the most valuable in all of Russia since most of their land is icebound nothing.

>Why does Russia want this land so much?

1: Crimea is particularly important because Sevastapol is Russia's only major port on the Black sea and their only port in the west that remains ice free through winter. They had a lease with the Ukrainian government to operate their naval base there; but after the 2014 coup/uprising/color revolution, they figured the new pro NATO government was going to end that so they helped Crimea secede.

2: They want a buffer zone between them and NATO. Both Napoleon and Hitler passed through the area in yellow on their way to attacking Moscow.

3: There's a bunch of oil and gas in east Ukraine.

Connect it up to Crimea to further legitimize their claim on it.

Hence the Ukrainian campaign has always had a focus on hitting shit in Crimea and right now is doing all it can to effectively cut it off to siege it.

Also this too >>538319923 because their initial invasion touched these regions and they want to be given the rest of them free (including the kherson and zaporhizia cities) to say they won some kind of concession due to their respectable fearsome power. If they just stopped and froze the lines where they are it looks more like it was because Russia was unable to fight on further rather than setting some goal that the enemy acquiesced to. They actually need Ukraine to agree to give them some more land free without a fight to pitch it as some kind of win vs their obviously getting bogged down advancing only with desperate flailing tactics and throwing in the towel.
>>
>>538321521
if mexico invaded and took el paso + a few other spanish speaking border cities I would absolutely not give a fuck. and that situation would arguably be worse since we'd be getting our weak asses invaded by literal brownoids.

>>
>>538319827
The initial plan was that they'd blitz Kiev, decapitate leadership and hijack the whole country. And turn it into a puppet state and call it denazification.
When it failed badly, they had to retrench and cope with a much more modest objective of taking the coastline, so they'd have a coridor to Crimea and thus basically block most of Ukraine's access to the Black Sea, take their industrial ports and those regions with the largest concentration of Russophones.

I think Russia intended to break Ukraine apart for a very long time, since the early 00s. There is an interview with his former advisor where he says that.
It was a question of creating a buffer zone state vs NATO/EU. And secure a reservoir of cheap labour for the oligarch businesses.

But the timing of the invasion in 2022 was picked after Merkel left office and also to lift Putin's popularity. Basically they tried to pull a Crimea 2.0 move, they thought it would be a quick and shocking blow to the Ukrainian state and they would surrender fast.
It didn't work out that way and they had to cope with just taking 'Novorossia' and Crimea. They've been stuck there ever since.

Those four provinces (oblasts) had referendums and voted to separate from Ukraine and stay with Russia. They were majority Russian-speaking and feared the Ukrainian Azov Neo-nazi military gangs (covertly supported and trained by the government) that sought out opposition to Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Those gangs mostly targeted Russian-speakers and Russian Orthodox church members. For eight years the gangs raided and bombed the four eastern oblasts, gearing up and getting ready to invade. They were firing artillery into towns and cities. The oblasts appealed to Putin to intervene. Putin finally moved Russian forces.

Note that for years Russia has stayed put within the Oblast's borders, save for tactical excursions.

>>

>>
>>538319827
Because it's full of ethnic Russians that the Ukrainians were conducting pogroms on. Russia invaded, in part, to protect them. They voted to become a part of Russia, but Kiev vetoed the vote. When they tried to put NATO weapons in Ukraine, that was the last straw.

Because Ukraine threatened Russians gas station Status. Selling to EU through the existing pipelines. And Ukraine would flood the market getting as much oil/gas money before the EU gets more renewable every year. So they would crash the market because for them anything is better than nothing. It's a bonus. While Russia needs a minimum price to keep the state afloat.

There's a lot a reasons, but primarily Ukraine is like Russia's "Canada". The United States would not tolerate a coup in Mexico or Canada. Nor would they tolerate Chinese bases in Canada, and/or Russian bases in Mexico. AND THEY SURE AS FUCK WOULD NOT TOLERATE THOSE BASES BEING ARMED WITH NUCLEAR MISSILES, JUST 7 MINUTES FLY TIME FROM PRIME US TARGETS AND WASHINGTON DC.

-You can also add that 30%-40% of Ukraine are ethnic Russians.
-Crimea is Russia's only warm water port.
-Ukraine has vast oil and gas reserves that can be developed, and/or just kept off the market.
-Many NATO members have openly talked about a "decapitation strike" against Moscow, which is 10x easier from Ukraine, than from Poland.
-I'm sure there's some more reasons I can't remember, and none of these will you ever hear from a western news outlet.

Defensive strategical value: Sevastopol is keystone to southern defense (and has been since early 1900s).
Resource value: Black earth, natural gas, minerals riches.
Developmental-logistical value: Due to past integration it is one of rare few areas in Russia where logistics are not as much of a problem in combination with local specialties / industries.
Logistical-strategic value: It is their claim and hold on the Black Sea; Odessa without Crimea is not worth much.

Finally there are some moral reasons too, but those do not genuinely matter and are always easily disputed by their very nature as mere opinions.

Oh and there is of course the "spark" of war that originated there, being neither moral nor strategical: The Ukrainian blockade of water for the Crimea forced Russia into action.
And while thishas no further moral or strategical relevance the "spark" location always retains significance in the conflict it sparked.
>>
>>538326104
Maybe you should read what is happening a little more. The NeoCohens talk about "decapitation strikes". the Glow Niggers talk about "regime change", and the Money Jews lament that it's "not fiar" (to jews) that Russia has only 3% of the world's population while having over 30% of the planet's resources.
That last one really steams their jewy, rubbing hands. Every night they dream of a "decapitated" Russian "broken up" into easily controlled (exploited) micro-states. And every night little Pooty dreams that " a world without Russia, doesn't deserve to exist".

Kiev WAS the capital of Imperial Russia 400 years ago. It is also the birthplace of the RUSSIAN Orthodox Church. That's one reason why Russia won't nuke it into dust (and they know it, too).
The Russian capital was moved from Kiev to Moscow because they KEPT GETTING INVADED BY ASSHOLE EUROPEANS FROM THE WEST, and they wanted a more defendable capital city.

And yes, the eastern 2/3rds of Ukraine has traditionally been a part of Russia (while the western 1/3 has been owned by Poland, Sweden, or other "European powers".
