Collapse in living standards and soaring prices of RAM amidst economic strife are causing the "end" of gaming.

>1980-90s: videogame explode in popularity, arcade and home consoles are everywhere, video games begin to rival movies among millenials
>2000s: videogames go full mainstream with collossal hits like GTA and Call of Duty, the industry reaches its artistic zenith with titles like Planescape and rival genre literature with titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age
>2010s: industry reaches mainstream reach, yet the first cracks reveal themselves, when gamers are rejected and associated with extremist sympathies
>2020s: soaring AI industries make personal computing and access to technology quickly disappear among common people, and the first casualties come from hobbies that rely on technology like gaming and movies
>very little sympathy to the soaring costs of gaming, since gaming failed to attain cultural status like film and literature and sport, being delegated to the status of pro-wrestling
>investment disappears left and right, big companies close doors, only a few big companies and some hundred indies with aging fans keep the water running

Gaming is the next WWE: a niche hobby for 5 million people who grew up with it. Some popular characters may use gambling as a means to acquire popularity and make it to cinema and literature, but that is it. Gamers are sided with wrestling and NASCAR fans as some fringe nerd internet rednecks.

Gamer Gate doomed gaming, by making sure that thr only people who build an identity around gaming are those that have already grown up engaging in it.

The USA destroyed gaming, as the first casualty from a devastating free fall in living standards. Phones, television, even electronics like domestic equipment will follow suit.

Yes, this is political. People getting so poor that toys enjoyed by millions ten years ago are becoming inacessible.
>>
>>538362005
None of this is true and they will just produce less less capable and expensive systems, budgets will get cut and it actually may save gaming by removing the cancer that ruined it. So instead of AAA way overproduced bullshit and a focus on better graphics which always means textures and lighting, we will see a focus on actually making good games again.
>>
>>538362214
>we will see a focus on actually making good games again.
They won't go back to making video games at all. These companies will close, stay closed, and people you agree with politically won't have any jobs at all
>>
>>538362005
You're too young to remember that the games industry already huge crash in the early 80s and came through better for it.
>>
>young men take up learning a sport of musical instrument instead of video games

>rise of young marriages and increase in having kids
>economic boom results

>You're too young to remember that the games industry already huge crash in the early 80s and came through better for it.

Holy shit, an actual knowledgeable person pops up in in a game thread on /pol/
>>
>>538362382
The crash during the 80s was during the highest moment of gaming, when there was so much being made everywhere.

The modern crisis is nothing like the 80s. We are suffering an affordability crisis, where companies will close and stay closed, due to low revenues (due to declining living standards and rising cost of the hobby) combined with rising production costs and other applications to technology with better marginal returns, such as AI.

The age of AAA games with massive cultural impact is over. And we are not back to what gaming was in the late 2000s, neither. We are in this sad zone where gaming is simply declining. There is ever less of it. Corners are being cut. Devs are being laid off. Resources are being repurposed to AI, and gamers are buying ever less.

This is the end of WCW era for gaming.
>>
>>538362661
The "ET Crisis" is hardly some obscure fact. But ET was a crisis of overproduction. This is a crisis of affordability.
>>
This is just an exodus of money printing 'investment' because gamers are no longer buying wakanda homo AIDs Halo 9: Infinite Money Printing for Xbox: Dubai. Gaming as an industry is still growing.
>>
>>538362400
That's not even approaching the crux of the issue. People use avenues of escape because this place fucking sucks. When times are tough people fall into their vices, whether that's chemicals or escapism via gaming and films.

Just because I don't have access to a gaming system doesn't have any bearing on whether I break down and contribute to the judaized shitscape of a nation we've been left with. Nah fuck you. I hope other people have kids though because I sure as shit am not.

China, Japan, and Korea will weather this crash like Japan weathered it in the 80s. The game crash in Western studios and PS/XB is due solely to hiring women, faggots, and troons to make games and run HR departments. They've been pulling from US universities which have been turned into activist factories, and these people are incapable of creating anything. They were never taught to create, they were taught to protest and "change culture" which is impossible. The American gamer will simply buy games made in Asian countries.

huh?
to begin with, if you build your identity around video games you are a retard, "gamer" is label one assumes to identify as a fellow hobbyist

things were better back when gaming was a niche thing ffor weirdos and dorks. normies just ruin everything

let the ram-pocalypse befall the graphic whores as the ghost of 30fps lag grabs them by their Unrreal Engine V generic assets
the greatest games of all time exist in part due to devs working around console technical limitations

>>
>>538363557
Gamergate and wokeness was the distraction and propaganda end of an attempt to use the gaming industry as another vessel for a cyclical pump and dump scheme. Only problem is, the pump and dump bounced right off the gaming industry and now gamers are more radicalized than ever.
>gaming will end up like wrestling and nascar
lmfao. LOL
>>
>>538362005
The AI-induced shortages are temporary. Economics will force unprofitable AI companies to slow down spending on it and they won't be able to buy up all of the memory with other people's money. That will cause a glut of computer components to flood the market and consumer hardware will be affordable again.

It's still a couple years away but it will happen.

>>
>>538362868
Blockbuster AAA crap with cinematic graphics and boring on-rails gameplay where you press X to win is what led us to where we are now. Gaming peaked in the 2000's when games had low poly graphics and developers were forced to make the gameplay good to make the games good. Those games were made by teams of like 30 dudes who were extremely passionate about making good games.

We are more likely to return to that paradigm. AAA games are too expensive to develop and play. Games will have to get cheaper and better to be viable.

You're assuming this is just a speculative bubble and not a deliberate attempt to kill off PCs.
If the conspiracy theorists are right, there won't be a "correction", just ever-increasing prices.
The only "PC" most people will be able to afford will be a lobotomized terminal useless without an internet connection and cloud subscription.
>>
>>538365189
It's not deliberate. To move away from digital interfacing is a good thing.
>>
>>538362400
Musical instruments are way more fun than any video game, and I love video games. It's a shame how many people miss out.
>>
>>538362005
This schizoid argument always feels off to me.
If they wanted to move everything to the cloud why wouldn't they have the infrastructure up BEFORE enacting the plan? And why aren't they pushing legislation that would then force people onto the cloud?
And if they wanted to do it they'd need the buy-in of other businesses, but most IT teams I've spoken with are doing the exact opposite. Moving shit back on-prem that's critical and just biting the cost.

Realistic answer as I see it? RAM producers, who have made small margins until recently are colluding to milk the fuck out of this. Likely also working with certain sectors of the AI and silicon industries more broadly to make it happen.
>>
>>538366199
But yeah. This 'death of gaming' talk is just schizoid babble. Too many powerful players have interests that run opposite that for it to ever happen. They'd have to make this a really long slow burn scheme over 20 years. And elite faggots only think in terms of the next quarterly meeting.
>>
>>538366199
Computing is dying because everyone who truly knows how they work is dead or senile. For a short time around the turn of the millennium the internet allowed mediocre people to advertise themselves as serious people. Now it's disappearing due to years of neglect and abuse. A huehue complains about getting things that were never intended for him.

Gaming is an American activity. Everyone else just joined in because le American was doing it
>>
>>538365189
It's not a conspiracy lol. The problem is that PC components are very expensive to develop and they can only be sold at a profit if there is huge demand. Before the AI thing, memory manufacturers were operating at a loss. ChatGPT happened and suddenly everyone wanted to build these chat bot things that required a lot of memory, and there was demand for this product that the companies making it were basically giving away a year ago. The memory market is just inherently volatile like this.

The demand driving up prices right now isn't sustainable. AI companies are already unprofitable as-is. Paying exorbitant prices for hardware doesn't help that. They will have to slow down with the buying and prices will come back down.
>>
>>538366445
There hasn't been one decent game from any major developing house in 12 years. Gaming is fucking dead and everyone knows it except for trannies who still believe 30 year old technology is the future.
It doesn't matter how many people buy in because the buy in exists to insure that you remain a passive element.
Even in the past games that endured were on the grounds of artistic value alone with little to no technical considerations.
Just face it. It's over.

>>538367690
You're retarded, I and many of us did it in the 90's and i can do it today with tools far superior than back then. modern 3dsmax + photoshop with C++ core game engine is more than enough to build a 8-20 hour game in a year that can be sold for 20-45 bucks. hell if you use an existing engine like flax engine or something similar, you can reduce a significant amount of development time even further.

shit if you use ai to generate stuff too you can get textures, models, music, ui, everything can be cleaned up instead of starting from scratch. I built a prototype a year ago using ai asset generation and i had more than enough assets to build a full game but decided i would go back to the drawing board and make something else because it wasn't as fun as i thought it would be.

the hard part isn't the assets anymore with modern tools minus ai, it's coming up with a good game idea and having proper systems in place to make your game actually fun to play. if you throw ai into the mix you have a significant advantage on top of it. a single dev can craft the world exactly as they see it. adding people pollutes the vision.

Idk this feels like the movies argument. Sure most movies coming out are shit but you have like decades of good ones fromt he past you've never seen. Same as vidya. There's games you've never played that are 10/10s theres mod overhauls which make games you've played or never played 10/10 theres community sources revivals of older games which are held in high regards that you've never played etc.

Gaming is too consumer spam focused and gamer cattle are just so obsessed with cheap novelty experiences, they're half the reason things became so trash to begin with. The best thing we could see is a bunch of these companies just go under and new blood coming in to refresh the stale industry who's main staple titles have no business existing in reality as it is. it has and does. Cruelty Squad was made by a single Finnish guy. minecraft was built by notch. see >>538368651 for dos era games made by 1 guy. there's plenty of other examples too. like total conversion mods for various games and other commercial success stories of 1 dev games

sure sure, but you could google single developer games and see hundreds, and of them, there's quite a few commercial successes, and a few btfo industry hits. that's why you need to know when to fold em and when to hold em when you're developing, many just truck on through and build a shit game. but that's true with studios too. modern gaming is filled with multi million dollar failures

We had experimental movies in the 70s and 80s because production was so cheap, studios could take risks. A movie that flopped in theaters could make a killing on home video and cable. Now movies are so much more expensive and less profitable (streaming killed DVD and cable) that studios need to play it safe. We could never get Raiders of the Lost Arc or Star Wars today. They would be way too risky.

there are far more tv and film productions being made today because of streaming to the point where it's a problem and talent is being spread too thin

The only value attached to the price was that most people couldn't afford it. That's why you brought your friends over to play split screen.

>They will have to slow down with the buying and prices will come back down.
They aren't going down again. Companies know we will pay these prices so they will continue to charge these prices.

Is desperately posting for the last word on 4chan part of the game dev process? Forgive me but I admit I'm not familiar with the inner workings.

Vidya has been infiltrated by investors and activists gradually over the past 20 years, and they're a massive weight on the industry. Between devs directly catering to who will be preemptively buying them out (and thus not building games off of the consumer base), investors pushing well meaning devs toward endlessly larger audiences, access journalism making it impossible for customers to make intelligent choices, and companies outsourcing as much as possible first to cheap immigrants and now to AI, the entire industry is just rotted beyond hope.
Luckily the indie market is almost completely unaffected by this, since the massive investor sphere hasn't latched onto them. AAA gaming is crashing and will continue to dip further, and smart gamers will either stick to indie or just play old games where you don't have to deal with increasing price/increasing file size/increasing production cycles/decreasing quality.

USAE-1 Please Respond. Please Respond Over Please Respond.

Now you can begin actually even, your journey of training to a firm grasp upon the obvious, not sludge gargling jeetzza in front of this hot aftermarket parts Pootergeist 3000, and with my help you will be the best. Let the highest form of training begin. I somehow dodged owning every Ballstation, and it adds to the high score now. Your best bet is to make a clear Game Boy Pocket with Metroid 2 and a Casio CA-53W your circle of friends. Your best bet is to land to rainy Zebes to stay there. In just one of those rains.

Companies will close because they drove off all the people that actually like games in favor of hiring blue haired feminist morons that want to shove their agendas into every story. Good riddance.

the one thing that could save vidya is virtual PC's of dev kits being free to the public

I doubt the architects at the top of our civilization will allow such an effective sink of the workers' free time, energy, focus, and mental bandwidth die off. Unless they plan to start actively, significantly reducing our numbers, that is.

ET didn't cause the crash. It was a shit game but kinda impressive that it worked at all given the short time to make it. Fall into random pits to find candy and phone parts while scientists were trying to nab you lol. I think Eliot could help you I don't remember it's been decades.

>AAA gaming has sucked for many years
>even indie devs are shit coders and use far too many computer resources even if the games are OK

Gaming literally died when the PS4 came out, it was almost over when the PS3 came out. If you aren't retro gaymen you're just fucking retarded.

I've been playing Crimson Desert. Before that all old games. I still play old sierra games on my Tandy.

oh this might affect me in 10-15 years because i am that far behind in games...whats the point of being forced to be a tow truck driver in gta v and if i have to play a black i prefer a skinny one like CJ compared to a big one and how would a black man have driving power up when i never see black racing drivers?

>why aren't they pushing legislation that would then force people onto the cloud?
States like California already have laws banning computers that consume "too much" power.
Expect more of this.
Eventually the only computers that will be legal to sell will be dumb terminals.
"Gaming PCs" will be de facto illegal because they consume too much power.
(Expect an underground trade in such PCs to develop.)

>States like California
i.e. Hollywood, which is paranoid about losing its monopoly on production of video entertainment to amateurs with powerful PCs.
