Realistically this makes now 4 generations in a row in the US and 6+ generations in places like the UK for consecutive generations experiencing declining standards of living. Does it really just come down to 12 missed meals?

Every new generation experiences the current state of the world as normal. Tension is caused by the increasing gap between what new generations are told what the world is versus how new generations experience the world and how that lived experience matches with the narratives found on alternative media like 4chan and some youtube channels. With increasing censorship of the media new generations will be prevented from learning the truth before it's too late. Governments have mastered the art of walking the tight rope between realizing their plans and keeping the public just comfortable enough to not flip the fgame board.
