We didn't become involved in fighting on a large scale until 1944. By then Germany had already lost the war. And in the case of Japan, almost all of the fighting was done on the mainland. The real reason Japan surrounded was because they were getting trounced by the Red Army.

But once the Germans were defeated, Stalin broke the non-aggression pact and went to war against Japan anyway.What Japan should have done is made sure the Soviets lost. That would have more-or-less knocked the allies out of the war and America would have gone back into isolation.
