An actual buddhist that transcended the average "dudebro medditate/stupid crystal rubbing bint" believes in the concept of Anatta, which translates to "not-self" or "no soul". Their fundamental belief that there is no independent essence, soul, or self within any human being or phenomenon which stems from an old passage that was actually using negation to define the actual existing "soul", just as being non specific and unobtainable from a materialistic standpoint. As in you literally cannot "hold a soul" in your hands. Yet the confusion was basically interpreted atomistically and that's what you have now, "Buddhists" which are really just an odd blend of geomancers and Atheists.

The more you abnegate self, the more true being flows into you to take its place. Perfection compassion is only possible through perfectly selflessness. It's in no way nihilistic, life denying or atheistic. You just have to understand that perfect objectivity and perfect love are the same thing, and it all makes perfect sense.
