Russia with the help of Prigozhin‘s Wagner company sending meat-waves into the city to capture Bakhmut, a defensive super fortress of a city because of the east side river+ flat concrete downtown + western side hills and tall heavy Soviet apartment blocs. It was claimed when the city falls there were no Ukranian defensive lines left until the Dinipro itself and that “the whole front will be rolled up like a ball”. What they didn’t expect is the massive concrete apartments sucked at defense and caught fire/flattened in a world of constant bombardment and drone strikes. Instead the dirt buggy rally race track and nooked valley hill tree covered terrain but still flat enough to drive a tank in any direction is the ultimate offense/defense. Chasiv Yar turns out was better defended than the entire city of Bakhmut and what started as just a high ground to scope out targets and launch artillery turned into the rapid deployment and retreat tactics that harassed Russia across every inch of the city. The fact Chasiv Yar hasn’t fallen since its prediction shows how having momentum as well as geography on your side are still the important fundamental factors for who wins the war. Who knows, maybe now that Chasiv Yar is close to falling they cannot as easily do rapid deploy + mass rocket launches anymore. And maybe the prediction of slow rolling across the plains is finally feasible for Russia. Or Ukraine, having turned a “hold out for just another hour we need more time to build defenses” into a multi-year long struggle so any “defenses” that needed to be built have been sitting in place for a while now.
