Previously this would have resulted in an immediate attack by a US led NATO using conventional weapons. Unsure if that would happen under Trump. Every country would be compelled to completely cut ties with Russia, including China though.

Instead, most of the free world sends support to Ukraine, extending what would have been a month of skirmishes to a four year war that will take decades to recover from. If Russia uses a tactical nuke, the world might just condemn the action and do nothing else, because it is tired of their conflict and has its own shit to deal with internally. But it could also, just as well, overreact and use that one nuke as a reason to go to war with Russia in earnest, almost certainly to stall internal conflicts and unite the west, which has been crumbling in loyalty for 8 years (at least, depending on what you deem as a start, it could be more). So really, it's anyone's guess. My prediction is that Russia will not risk provoking the west further. It deems the west as being weak right now, and using a tactical nuke would give western leaders an excuse to stop rattling their sabre, and actually draw it. It would be effortless to scare the population into support for this, because nuclear weapons are the boogeyman of the modern age.
