They use salt because its cheap and plentiful, and up until about the 1990s cars rusted apart by about 100k miles, but by then they were all used up and wouldn't get much further even without the rust. Now that body panels have gotten thinner to save money, they rust out much faster, but otherwise could get to 150-200k miles. They're rusting apart before the engine and interior is used up. Then give tax incentives for businesses to move in and drive the economy. They won't do this because its predominantly blue states in the rust belt so their plan is to let shit casually decay and rot. Dare I say, let it rust away.
