>>538675677My understanding is that the SR-71 was a prestige assignment in the air force and a lot of pilots/mission commanders went on to earn general rank, so there was a lot of jealousy and rival procurement programs. It seems as if the path to career success in the US military (and honestly probably the same in most other countries) is to get control over the development of some new technology/design that can be sold to Congress for billions of procurement dollars, and then build a little administrative empire inside the pentagon for the rest of your time in uniform. Much easier and safer to fight all your important battles in Capitol Hill.
