Muslims don't hate dogs or want to slaughter dogs, they simply believe they are tools with an intended purpose and they are not to be taken as literal companions. For Muslims, all things on earth are ordered and have a role to play. Dogs are viewed as wild animals that should be kept for practical purposes such as hunting, farming, raising livestock, etc. A dog is to be kept outside the home, never inside the home. A dog is simply a tool to get practical things around your private land accomplished. The dog keeps out thieves and maybe vermin. He has a job to do and he is to be treated well and fed and watered but still viewed as a mere animal with a role, not something that is to be treated like a human child or a human partner.An Afghan or Arab migrant arrives in the West and scratches his head in amazement at Westerners keeping dogs in their homes, letting them sleep in their beds, letting them lick their babies heads and faces, sharing meals with them.Muslims have even been observed to approach Westerners walking their dogs and just ask some basic questions about dog ownership. This is not done with malice but with astonishment at what they are seeing. In the Muslim world dogs are creatures that roam the streets and eat out of trash and just wander around. They are brought in as and when the owner may need them for a task. But Westerners are observed giving their dogs names, dressing them up, sharing meals and family days out with them, marrying them. This is all shocking to Muslims. Muslims love cats and keep them as pets but keeping a dog as a pet is seen as about as strange as keeping a wolf or a lion as a pet.

Nobody understands whites’ appreciation of dogs, or horses, or falcons, or any of these animals for the simple fact that we come from a semi-pastoral hunter culture and they don’t. Why do they Japanese love to eat fish? Because it’s a fishing culture. They come from a people who spent a lot of time fishing. Western people herded cattle and hunted across the North European plain and into the forests of Europe, then to America. It’s the same sort of thing that made the English so appreciative of naval activity. We developed a deep bond with hounds over centuries of hunting with them and using them as livestock guardians, plus warmth in cold European winters. We’re literally history’s aristocrats who’ve been brought closer to animals through our environment and history and they’re not. That’s why they don’t get it.
