Only a few silos out there are a social experiment with a control silo and the idea is that people outside are exposed to nanobots that kill them so they don't discover the other silos with the maain reason being that they will kill each other. So that sherrif lady becomes like moses and goes to a 'dead' silo that had the killswitch flipped from the control silo and then shit happens. In the end they were able to fire some drones from the control silo only to find out that the rest of the world lives a normal life and they have been tricked and the nanobots could only spread so far. Also the books span a few generations.

Love this show but the programming is obvious. They also changed a major character's name in s3 from Donald to Daniel, but still had his sister call him that. The author says the change was to prevent political "mudslinging" but we all know that's not the real reason, otherwise there would be no mention of the other name associated it with the politician character kek.
