There is a non-zero chance he would have gotten away with it if he had ditched/destroyed the evidence he was carrying around with him. He also incriminated himself when they tracked him to McDonald's -- he gave the police a fake name/ID that they were already onto because it was the one he used to check into the hostel. Then he eventually told them his real name, which led to a legitimate reason to arrest him (and search him/his belongings) for providing false identification.He should not 1) have had any of the incriminating items on his person at all and 2) should not have talked to the police when they approached him.
