what they won't tell you.
Being intubated to breathe kills you with positive pressure. If they used an Iron lung they could keep you breathing while your body heals without the positive lung pressure killing you.
We have the technology to make a more modern iron lung.
But intubating is cheaper.

It can permanently destroy the diaphragm or cause chest muscle paralysis, rendering lungs effectively useless
>>
>>538761787
Their muscles have atrophied from Polio and need a pressurized chamber to move the diaphragm to breathe. Otherwise it's a conventional artificial respirator which will eventually kill you from long term use. Plus you'd need a feeding tube and and can't talk.
>>
>>538761847
but the point is that iron lungs can be, and in some cases, should be, still used not just on elderly polio cases
>>
>>538761110

The headline is lying. Maintaining old machinery and equipment is what machine job shops specialize in. This woman died, because her hospice provider didn't want to pay the money to have the unit repaired.

it's funnier because she's a boomer and you know it'll be boomers posting "THOSE DANG MILLENNIALS WITH THERI LACK OF WORK ETHIC NOT FIXIN DA MACHINES" because you know there's some white 43yo mechanic out there who was supposed to be trained on exactly this shit 25 years ago but some boomer in his 50s looked and him and decided "thsi kid will take my job if I train him" then when fatass finally keeled over from one of his many heart attacks 15 years later, the machine was left to run on hopes and dreams

Today that 43yo xiennial mechanic, shat upon by boomer retirees in the comments of that article probably, gets most of his money running a youtube channel showing off neat repair tricks for cars you can do at home instead of taking them to the shop and selling merch because he was never able to move up to master mechanic or whatever because of a series of never-retiring boomers who refuse to pass on their knowledge and then seethe and moan when the consequences bite them in the ass.

Ironically you could probably have billionaires pay boomers to pass their knowledge directly to AI for money, but guys like elon are too cheap to pay for tactile knowledge and too dumb to know why it would be valuable if you're shilling "robots who will do all the work for you!" as the next big thing in the 2030s.

It had nothing to do with the machine breaking down. The machine was functioning when she died.

>“They told her she wasn’t supposed to live past 20 years old,” Lillard’s younger sister, Cindy McVey, told The Associated Press on Friday. “She had the enthusiasm and the drive to continue living and make the best of her life.”

McVey attributes her sister’s death to the effects of long-haul COVID-19. A death certificate lists causes as chronic pulmonary failure and post-polio syndrome, McVey said.

The difference here is that the internet is in active use. There are literally millions of users on the internet daily. It's hugely profitable to learn all the specific ins and outs of the internet, and a lot of people do. Meanwhile the iron lung was used by a single digit number of people up until the last one died. It's pointless to learn about using something essentially nobody uses. You might think you have some point about the competency crisis or planned obsolescence, but really you don't. Just say you hate pajeets because they shit everywhere like the rest of us.

I think the right person can fix anything. There's two types of technicians in my experience.
There's the ones that can repeat learned behaviour and there are the ones that can look at a system, sometimes with the help of some tech docs, and understand the system well enough to repair it. If they couldn't repair the iron lung, it's probably because they were looking for people with learned experience on them. Instead of trying to find someone who can assess the system, then formulate a solution.

>>
>>538764555
Especially true given technology like 3D printing and CNC. Which means parts availability is irrelevant. Honestly the sad truth is probably that there's no money or incentive to find someone to fix it. There's probably some high school drop out mechanic that would have slapped it together in a weekend. Get it going for another five or ten years, but like you said, if they did have the money and incentive they'd look for an engineer, then end up with raj who lied in his CV.

She reached out to the news to get eyes on her to find someone who wanted to try and do maintenance on it, but died 8 days later. She didn't die from the machine failing.
>Martha Lillard was removed from the vacuum, and for the first time in 73 years, she slept outside the iron lung; eternal rest.

>Over the decades, some polio survivors transitioned to more modern respirators, but for Martha, nothing worked like the bellows of the iron lung.

>“I tried all of them,” she said. “None of them could get up to 21 pounds (per square inch), which is what I needed to breathe. So they just weren’t effective.”

>>538767068
Also, reading the article
>Her grandfather retrofitted the tank, adding a secondary motor so she could open the hatch from the inside.
It's from the 50s. It is entirely mechanical and hands-on maintenance. Someone "good with tools" could probably figure it out.

Anyway, they keep blaming covid for the reason, but considering she most assuredly almost never left the fucking house, it's more likely old age was finally getting to her.

>>

Her family probably paid the technician a few hundred bucks to say it was unfixable. I bet they already had a deposit down on the pool table they're gonna put in the room she used to stink up.

>The government
Holy shit. Imagine being this clueless and retarded. Public sector jobs are occupied by people not good enough for the private sector.

this is stupid, how is that no American engineer cant repair 1940s tech... those are mechanical gadgets, most likely no one funded the repair of the machine.

Hospitals don't make decisions based on what insurance companies want, and the insurance companies have nothing to do with paying to maintain hospital equipment. You're incredibly retarded and have no understanding of how any of this works.

So this technology has been around since the 40s and somehow we can't fix it? Even with a guy in here saying he's a medical technician and has fixed them before?

So what's the issue here, what happened? Can you tell us?

No, the paralysis from polio IS from polio, it's just a very, very rare autoimmune reaction to the disease. Your immune system, while fighting the virus, also decides to attack your own nervous system. Most people who get polio are fine and recover.
>>
>>538769514
Saar! Saar! Thats it Saar! Let Elon import bajillions more jeets to own the libs!
>>
>>538761110
Yeah, that's a lie. There was no causation between machine being old and breaking down and her death. She died because she was a 78 year old polio patient whos condition worsened after going through covid. She also refused to use iron lung alternatives.
The idea that she died because no one could repair a machine is fantastical.
>>
>>538767345
This.
>>
>>538763211
Imagine thinking that iron lung patients are stuck there 24/7. Most of them just use it at night and during the day they're normally outside.
>>
>>538761787
it wasn't from polio, the damage is caused by polio vaccine. you can look it up

Even niggers don't have the excuse of being totally genetically determined. If they had present fathers who spent time reading with them and teaching them positive conflict resolution they wouldn't be a(s much of a) bunch of babbling gun-toting pavement apes that speak in malapropisms. My father was a mostly absent alcoholic, but the one thing I'm not is a thin-skinned pussy with the vanity of the average American negro.

Parenting actually matters--look at the academic accomplishment of slants.
>>
>>538764836
This. I can't imagine it was due to anything but a lack of profit motive.
I hate boomers, but I feel bad because being a polio case seems like a hell of a hard life.
