When cigarette smoking was normalized, there was an understanding of them being for grown-ups. Obviously children would get a hold of smokes, but they would be reprimanded by their parents, even into the 70s and 80s. Residual scent and accessibility kept a lot of younger people away from them, or at least out of reach. Meanwhile if you were in highschool in the late 2010s, everyone started picking vapes up. What's particularly off-putting about vapes is the multitude of flavors and the colorful, clicky, plasticky design of the devices. Them being colorful and candy/fruit flavored makes them largely much more appealing to children and young people as an introduction to nicotine; ultimately bypassing cigarettes and going straight to vaping, and typically high-nic delivery devices. It wouldn't be so bad if there was only two flavors available, say Menthol and Tobacco, for potentially helping people get off cigarettes, instead of opening it up as a glorified alternative with a multitude of options, and subtly encouraging a preteen/teen consumer market. Sadly that isn't the case, and its too late to regulate something like it. The packaging on a lot of disposables is sometimes over the top, and the many flavors and disposable nature adds to unnecessary waste. The chemicals themselves, while combusted, probably aren't as bad as cigarette smoke is. But you're also getting metal particulates, heated plastic, and who knows what else is in the juice itself. Cigarettes may ultimately be better for you and the environment in that case, despite both being bad addictions.
