American actually used to be a racial term for anglo saxons here back in the 19th century. They had been a contiguous ethnic group since the mid 1600s. Unfortunately in the mid 19th century we got swarmed by foreigners. I think the italians could have integrated, and i think today most italian americans are just white. But its still the same as flooding london with 5 million italians, it causes a lot of change. Today the countryside is full of founding stock people with english last names, but they cant be more than like 20% of the population.
