I'm reading *East of Eden* right now, but it's not very challenging. I want to reach a truly native level, even a scholarly one. What do you recommend, good anons?
Elements of Style by Strunk and White, make sure you get the version published before computers were invented
Oh sorry you wanted reading recommendations that is more for writing.Anything by Steinbeck is pretty solid, you could just go through all the great English classics and that would definitely help with a lot of the words. For modern shit just read whatever you like, I prefer sci-fi but I like to read the old guys like Heinlein and shit

Nigger that is reading at a native level, the reading doesn't get harder only the comprehension of ideas as if you pick up philosophy or any specific field, most people can't even read a book these days, having said that the best English writer by mastery of the language in my opinion was orwell

>>538826027This book was a massive influence on me as a kid. Phenomenal storytelling. His other books are great too but there was something about the politics in Harsh Mistress that moved me.
>>538825050Thucydides - I think it's the Robert Straussler translation. It was done in the early 90's iirc so it's not archaic, but it still will challenge you, especially because he tries to keep the sentences at somewhat of a semblence as the Greek manuscripts. The Greeks very often had loong sentences lelHe doesn't try to use a lot of very obscure verbs/adjectives which is usually a big mire as a second language but you'll obviously run into some every so often. You'll want to have a couple of maps bookmarked of Greece/Western Anatolia at the time with city names for referencing. For a shorter and easier read that still would probably help some - The Anabasis Hardly any of 'The Great American Novels' are even remotely good. East of Eden is garbage imo, it actually just keeps getting worse the further you get into it.

The best book from which to study English is the King James Bible for it defined the English language, but not the so called new king james bible which ia entirely different. If you can read the more difficult 1600s English of the king james Bible and Shakespeare you'll never have trouble with modern English. Also try the pilgrims progress by john bunyan and acts and monuments by john foxe. Also ironically anything by Lovecraft or Tolkien, two fiction writers with excellent vocabulary. Also try to buy a websters 1828 dictionary since it has the original meanings of words and a good grammer introduction at the beginning. It's expensive but wrll worth it. Dracula by stoker is also very good as is mary shelleys frankenstein. These books all contain proper English. Focus on books written before 1960, especially before 1880.
Moby Dick. Very interesting prose, it wanders back and forth into alliterative poetry. The narrative is insanity - reminds me of a Hunter S Thompson book.
>>538825050I can wholeheartedly recommend the works of David Hume. His prose is considered the best that's ever been written in English.Even Schopenhauer was a fanboy of his!
>>538825050There are so many dialects of english that as long as you put in the effort to stick with something, you'll get beter. You don't need challenge, you need consistency. Read WORM by wildbow. It's a story about superheroes (but actually good and with creative powers and realistic, not slop bullshit). It's long, and you'll want to keep reading. You could always read some politislop if that's more up your alley. Ideally, find something you disagree with so you want to intellectually engage with the ideas mroe.
>>538825050Read some De’nesha Diamond, i hit C3 with that shiet.

>>538827200I was sort of thinking of sugesting Dracula as well. LotR is good for sure, though if he cares enough he'll probably be looking up what all the flora is in Spanish constantly.I was thinking of suggesting The Silmarillion but the very beginning is possibly pretty rough if he isn't a somewhat advanced English speaker already.Lovecraft could bog him down some due to vocabulary that he'll rarely ever see/use. The Color Out of Space and The Call of C'Thulu are really good by him though.
