I want to discuss something with you all since I am experiencing a great deal of disconnect on this matter.Kansas has a special ballot provision this year asking voters whether to change the Constitution so as to abolish the Supreme Court Nominating Commission and have voters directly vote for Supreme Court justices. It has become a fiercely partisan issue; Democrats are staunchly opposed, Republicans are staunchly for elections. However, I'm a fairly far-right individual and an attorney, but I really don't have an issue with the current system. I don't think Judges should be beholden to voters in the same way that politicians should, given that the courts are (supposed) to rule on what is correct in the law, not in what is popular. If Justices are worried about ensuring that they can be re-elected, they can be swayed by lobbyists and voters on issues that shouldn't really affect their judgment. While I agree that it's not ideal having the governor select them (given that Kansas currently has a Democrat governor), if that changes to a Republican governor (and Ty Masterson is currently favored), isn't it better to let him select the Justices instead? Someone please explain what I'm missing here, I'm not used to this kind of disconnect.
