English is a useful language that has some nice features which made it easier to use historically as a trade language and make it a good modern "lingua franca" (lol). However, it's got a lot of historical baggage and inconsistencies which gives it a lot of problems as well, and some of those problems are well-known and basically insoluble at this point. For example, we can't "spell things like they are pronounced" because there are tons of accents that all pronounce the same words differently, so people can't agree on how they ought to be spelled if they are spelled "as spoken." The ideal "universal language" would definitely have simple and consistent phonetics. English falls short on that and a number of other things, but it is still an expressive and flexible language that is very adaptable to various modalities and specialized uses. You don't have to make stuff up about how great English is, it has enough good stuff about it that is actually true.
