Both concepts are so vague and undefined, it’s next to impossible to make any accurate statements about either. Healthy patriotism with the ability to self-reflect and criticize the country you live in and the system it utilizes is good. Blind patriotism with fanatic devotion to your country regardless of which path it follows is bad.Nationalism is a bit more nuanced. It can be great for love and appreciation for own culture and history, in that case it would be serving as a solid foundation for unity and development. But it’s terrible in its extreme forms when instead of love for your own it devolves into disdain for other people and subsequent attempts to aggressively compete with them. In that case it becomes damaging to both the host and everybody around it, since it promotes discord instead of cooperation. So, to make nationalism fine you have to take "Faustian spirit" out of the mix, which seeks to weaponize the national sentiment and use it for aggression instead of self-improvement. That's what nationalists have to understand - if they want to have their national identity, they got to promote harmony and coexistence between cultures instead of trying to build a hierarchy among them. But the latter is easier, since it feeds the nationalists' ego much more readily and easily, so they will almost always choose that. Which almost always leads to their failure. So, nationalists are ultimately the architects of their own demise. All because they value nationalism only for quick effortless self-gratification.
