This is a great example of the problems of centralization of decisionmaking. Central planners think that this stuff is epic, but in reality it destroys society. They could have at least built tunnels or overpasses so people could move through it on foot or bicycle. Instead it presents a barrier more impassable than a river.
Also the wider the highway gets the harder it is to build a tunnel or bridge over it since it would require shutting it down for a long period.
