It used to be called Van Diemen's Land. But that apostrophe implied that it was owned by someone named Van Diemen who obviously wasn't British, so it was renamed to Tasmania which was a name that did not contain an apostrophe. Anyway, Abel Tasman obviously dropped the ball here. He didn't land on the island and he didn't notice the continent of Australia sitting north of it. He just sailed past Tasmania and noticed there were no settlements on the coast and continued on to New Zealand.
