And this pissed off everyone from New England down to Virginia. In a big way, Ohio played a motivating factor in the war. And it goes beyond that. In 1776 when Washington was desperate for more men, Hancock promised every enlisted man 100 acres in Ohio. This led to thousands of men signing up to join the Continental Army. Ohio is a special place. Even though it was not a state until 1803, it played a pivotal role in the creation of the nation.
