The much bigger issue that we favor single-family detached homes here, but new homes aren't being built quickly enough. This is because all of our mom and pop builders got wiped out after Wall St. did their little fucky wucky with the mortgages a few years back.
So now it's just a few behemoth builders that buy huge tracts of land and sit on them, shitting out houses at whichever rate optimizes the local supply/demand curve for their own profit. This also means they can get away with only building mcmansions, pricing most people out of the market.
