What next for bonds? The last time the government was able to issue 100B worth of long dated bonds was on the 20th of May. There were small trickles in June and now in July, which is Q3 and H2, nothing after 3 auction days. They only managed to eke out 10B of short dated shitters on the 1st and that's the sum of their H2 borrowing. When fixed rate bonds can't be sold, there's pressure on the government to sell floating rate bonds which obviously have dangerously expensive interest costs. But if the government wants money now, that's what they have to commit to.Yesterday they offered ~120B worth of floating rate bonds and couldn't sell any of them which is a stunning result. If you scan the archives of .ru media, the last time they failed to sell floating rate bonds was November 2024 when there was a mini banking crisis underway following Biden's sanctions on Russian clearing which routed the rubble at the time. Nabiullina had also simultaneously raised rates to 21% with ominous threats to keep raising. This time there are no new big sanctions and rates are nominally much lower so credit should be cheaper. But no one wants to buy russian government debt.A generous estimate of what they likely need to borrow for the rest of H2 is ~5T. They realistically need more but let's assume their financials are soothed by expensive oil somehow. There are 20 or so auction days left in the year. So each weekly auction day should average 400B. But taking Q3 numbers, it's just 3.3B, or less than 1%.
