I started working at a machine shop ~5 years ago with 0 experience and I'm making 6 figures and have equity in the business now. And we're growing we just got a new machine and started doing some medical work, I'll have a house next year, about half the down payment from just this years profit share. And I basically got reset 3 years ago from a benzo blackout and stay in county, cleared my savings, lost a bunch of my shit. Thankfully I was basically keeping the shop running at that point doing all the programing and a lot of the setups, the owner bonded me out and put me up in a motel up the street from the shop until I got my shit together lol. If you're good with computers and not afraid to get your hands dirty, it's a great industry IMO. But you have to find the right place to work, which once you have the skillset, you can be pretty picky about where you want to work, but the most important thing to look for right now is somewhere that will actually build your skillset rapidly. At least at the moment they're hurting for people and I don't see it getting better in the immediate future. And when I say people I mean people who know what they're doing - a lot of typically larger shops just want operators to stand there and load parts and hit the e-stop if a tool breaks but they don't want to educate them beyond that because their operator payscale tops out at $20/hr and if they taught the people to be machinists, they'd go elsewhere. Find tool and die, rapid prototyping or just general job shops. It's also just actually satisfying work, making things out of metal. The programming part is like a puzzle you gotta figure out how you can get at the features you need to cut with the tools you have in the fewest amount of setups then once you get everything setup, dialed in and running its bing chilling - listen to tunes, watch a movie, whatever. Spend 2 minutes measuring parts and loading stock, close the door hit the button and do whatever.
