Fires were always common, they're natural and perfectly normal and healthy for ecosystems like the boreal forest. What's different nowadays is the scale and intensity of the fires. We've fucked up the ecosystem with poor land and forestry management, herbicides, and invasive species. There's too much dead dry fuel built up. Add hotter and drier weather and you have a recipe for massive uncontrollable wildfires that burn so hot even the species adapted to thrive off of wildfires just die.
