We've fucked up the ecosystem with poor land and forestry management, herbicides, and invasive species. There's too much dead dry fuel built up. Add hotter and drier weather and you have a recipe for massive uncontrollable wildfires that burn so hot even the species adapted to thrive off of wildfires just die.
