I did notice that people I know who are religious tend to be happier and better people in general. Orthodox cathedrals tend to be very dark, stuffy with incense, almost claustrophobic-feeling. I've been told it comes from a folk tradition that God is more present in the dark. Obviously that's a nonsensical superstition, but it does produce a very powerful architectural effect.
