You should be paid for your commute, especially if the company you work for requires your address.

You also should be paid for the time it takes to get ready for the work, and moreso if your preparation time prevents you from eating a nutritious home cooked breakfast.
Then you should be paid for the time it takes you to get un-ready after work.
In addition to this, you should be paid for any missed time you would have been able to spend with the boys into the night based on the time you had to go to sleep in preparation for the next day of work.
Everyone knows 9-5 is not really just 9-5, so let's start forcing the employers to acknowledge that this slavery isn't funny.

Yeah. Let's start there.

Depending on your industry that's the standard here + there's two concurrent systems (one tiered by travel expense, one that scales directly with [distance multiplied by six] to your workplace).
It's doable and so far we haven't turned into Venezuela.
It's also helped keep villages alive and housing decently affordable because it massively reduces pricing pressures.

at what point does it stop being the employer paying you to do something vs them micromanaging your finances because you're a dumbass?

In the Netherlands, you can simply make it a tax deductible.

Sort of. I have to travel around the state for work but it's all based on the distance from Graz. Sometimes it doubles my pay for the day and other times it doesnt since it's right in the city. I live about 40 minutes out so the days I'm in Graz I pay for travel out of my own pocket

Ye there's edge cases.
Point is that the system exists and isn't even particularly noteworthy.
