There was a huge buildup for ww2, but direct profits were largely taxed away due to wartime tax laws that de facto set allowable profit at a fixed proportion to invested capital (and to half of borrowed capital). These tax laws did cause destruction to certain US industries; they are what caused our railroads to retreat from high tech passenger service. But they didnt impact the industries mainly built up during the war, and the real damage wouldnt be apparent for decades yet. Prosperity emerged after an initial postwar recession, and was driven by Bretton Woods. America was the only advanced industrial economy left in full operation, and we were rebuilding Europe and Japan into bulwarks against communism, buying their low value exports cheaply and supplying their hardware. But there was no solid exit strategy from Bretton Woods except to slam the gold window and throw the US into an economy based on credit as a "virtual gold". This threw us into the stagflation crisis, which was not, in retrospect, an actual crisis. It was a bad "knob setting". The proper solution was to gradually increase interest rates. Instead, the Fed "scrammed the reactor" and THAT is what destroyed our industry. Industry relies on credit. You must have materials and equipment before you can sell product, even if the sales will bring in 100x what you borrowed. Raising interest so high, made it unaffordable to service debt, and crushed capital goods industries. We had layoffs in the hundred thousands that were never replaced. By 1980, the damage was done. The big cities were a sea of industrial ruins that have just gained weeds since then. Everything since then is a struggle in the ruins.
