Croatia: Bulgarian man arrested for putting skimmer devices on ATMs. DUBROVNIK police have arrested a 55-year-old Bulgarian citizen suspected of a series of criminal acts related to the theft of bank card data. He is accused of installing so-called skimming devices on ATMs in order to gain unauthorized access to users' data and PINs. A criminal complaint has been filed against him for the extended criminal act of making and using means for the misuse of non-cash payment instruments and for damaging someone else's property.He is suspected of having made nine improvised devices for reading card data, known as skimmers, in a rented Dubrovnik apartment between May 16 and July 14. In the apartment, he also made eight housings with recording cameras that resembled parts of an ATM.He placed these devices in the card slots or glued them above the keyboards of several ATMs in the old city center of Dubrovnik. His goal was to illegally collect data from cards. He also had a device in the apartment for reading, writing and erasing data from magnetic strips.The police also suspect him of having intentionally damaged several ATMs in the old city center in the second half of May. He inserted silicone objects into the card slots, thus disabling the card readers. In this way, he tried to direct users to ATMs on which he had previously installed skimming equipment.Police action and continued investigationThe police found and removed the devices in a timely manner, preventing misuse of the collected data. A search of the apartment used by the suspect yielded more than 80 items related to these criminal acts.The 55-year-old suspect was handed over to the detention unit of the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department with a criminal complaint. The criminal investigation continues.
