bush globohomo

decoupling of housing and wages (always @ 2X median income) started in 2000

People have to remember this housing crunch started when china entered trade in 2000 and Bush flooded us with open border foreigners and made it easier for foreigners to buy property and at the same time they started letting boat people loose in the community

free trade is the most sacred cow, so libertarians intentionally ignore this fact and instead overhype fraction reserve banking as the cause of housing hyperinflation, which only started in 2000 and not before the entrance of China into WTO

The claim falls apart because the median home price-to-income ratio was already over $3.5\times$ in the 1980s and 1990s, long before China joined the WTO or Bush took office. China’s trade boom lowered the cost of consumer goods but had zero structural impact on local lumber, concrete, or domestic real estate. The 2000s housing bubble was actually triggered when the Federal Reserve slashed interest rates to an unprecedented 1%, flooding the market with cheap capital and fueling a domestic subprime lending frenzy that had absolutely nothing to do with refugees or foreign buyers

your 900% surge is pure fiction. according to official federal reserve data, the us median home price rose from $165,300 in 2000 to $247,700 at its 2006 peak. that is a 50% increase, not 900%. your city numbers are completely fabricated to match a narrative. for instance, official uk land registry data shows the actual average home price in the uk in mid-2004 was around £137,000, nowhere near your claimed £400,000.

your timeline is completely broken because NAFTA took effect in 1994 and the WTO was created in 1995. this means the entire affordable 1990s era you are romanticizing was already deep under the wheel of global free trade. blaming the 2000s housing bubble on immigrants and trade deals is just an emotional scapegoat to ignore the real culprit, which was wall street packaging fraudulent subprime loans for domestic buyers, fueled by the federal reserve dropping interest rates to a historic 1%.

95% of houses in our cities were built before 1980s-- and mostly in between 1880-1960.

those houses are where most of the people reside and pay $1million to acquire an old property that was only worth $140k (2X the avg salary in year 2000)

2x median income is the long term historic ratio

you are completely misunderstanding the very quote you just posted. when Robert Shiller says the appreciation in US housing was just about zero, he explicitly specifies that he is talking about real appreciation adjusted for inflation, meaning housing historically just tracked the overall rate of inflation. it does not mean nominal home prices stayed flat or were pinned at an arbitrary 2x median income ratio.

pasting individual redfin links to prove an entire regional metro average is a massive cherry-picking fallacy. half of your examples are not even normal home sales. those Las Vegas properties listed as bought for $25,000 in 1995 and 1996 were raw, undeveloped vacant lots before the houses were actually built, and your other links are bottom-of-the-barrel, distressed properties from thirty years ago. this is why economists use regional median averages from agencies like FRED instead of individual listings; finding a few cheap, broken-down properties or raw dirt lots does not change the actual historical data.
>>
>>539196336

Reminder that before 2001, the American Dream wasn't a corporate trap—it was literally just basic math.
For nearly two centuries, a single-family home cost exactly 2X the median family income. If you made $9k in 1970, a house was $18k. If you made $30k in 1990, a house was $60k. You could literally work a warehouse job, buy a 3-bedroom rancher in the suburbs, support a housewife and two kids, and still have enough leftover cash to buy a boat and a classic muscle car.
Even in elite "oligarch" cities like LA, NYC, and Seattle, a blue-collar worker could pay off a home in two years. Al Bundy buying a suburban house on a shoe-salesman salary wasn't a sitcom joke; it was a documentary.
Then 2001 happened. The oligarchs, globalists, and central bankers realized that a comfy, independent middle class was bad for the bottom line. They opened the borders to flood the country with cheap labor, passed free-trade scams like NAFTA, and allowed foreign corporations to buy up local real estate like Monopoly pieces.
Now, the historic 2X ratio is completely dead. The average house is 5X to 10X the median salary. You need a white-collar dual income just to rent a 1-bedroom apartment from a faceless property management app. We went from a first-world society to a hyper-financialized neo-feudal nightmare where you own nothing, consoome the slop, and pay 70% of your paycheck to a landlord who doesn't even live in your time zone. You have no idea what they took from you.

Bush is pretty directly responsible for a lot of the problems that we now face, but people are failing to hold him responsible for it because the consequences happened after the precipitating events.
Much in the same way that Bill Clinton caused the 2008 crash, Bush caused the national debt crises (the war on terror took us from a national surplus to a massive debt we never got control over again), the current education crises (no child left behind FUCKED our schools), and kickstarted the executive overreach resulting in presidents having sweeping "emergency" powers they barely have to justify and american citizens being treated like foreign agents until proven otherwise (Patriot act, baby!).

We were warned at the time that these policies were going to do terrible things to this country, but the republicans wrapped themselves in the flag like a security blanket and assured themselves that would protect them from the consequences of their own actions. It did not.

Was Bush better than Trump? Yes. But only in the same way that having stage 1 cancer is better than having stage 4. Its less worse, but you only get to stage 4 by starting at stage 1 and the goal should be to not have cancer at all.

And the only way out of it these days is to get lucky enough to somehow manage your way into home ownership anyway, because at least a mortgage gets paid off *eventually* and you can start keeping your money after that even if it takes 20 years. As opposed to renting, which you will be stuck doing forever and never have anything to show for it.

Which also means that people financially can't really start a family until much later in life, which is a problem because when you can financially afford to support more than just yourself lines up with when having kids starts to become a problem. These days you've got like a 3-5 year window where having a baby is in the middle of the venn diagram where its both financially and biologically viable, assuming you are marrying someone your own age.

You are a dunce. Housing costs are very much supply/demand. Demand grew, supply didn’t. The reasons demand grew are not hard to determine. Immigration absolutely increases demand for housing. It’s not some third order thing. Do interest rates have an impact? Sure, but it’s second order. Anyway, it’s an empirical question that’s been answered definitively in recent research showing the increase in housing prices in the last decade or so is about 50% due to immigration.
