With a sound social contract and a strong sense of community, surveillance is truly unnecessary. As recent events in the United Kingdom have shown, the introduction of large-scale CCTV, digital IDs, and censorship should instead be interpreted as signs of a low-trust society that could not otherwise be sustained.
