Guess I'm fixing things myself because I'm old. In my 50s. I was pretty much abandoned as a kid so I had to learn shit myself. We were poor white trash too, so what few things I got, I tried desperately to keep them working. I'd glue legs back onto my GI Joes when I was a kid, learned how to clean the lens of my cd player, and when my car invariably broke down, I worked on it with friends until we located the problem. Tail light busted out? Buy a new one for 25 bucks and pop it in and connect the plug. Power window no longer works? By a replacement console from amazon and pop it into the side panel. Had some cart bust my outside mirror and I got a replacement one online and replaced it myself. Would've cost me 250 if I let the local shop do it.

If you don't have money, you have to learn to do shit yourself, there's no other option.

Boomers never taught their sons, and the few that taught themselves never taught their sons. Also, it’s like $150 for a non-chinesium carburetor these days. Tools and parts are expensive as fuck. It costs a week of minimum wage work to afford a cheap master craft set of trash sockets. I’ve had to learn everything I know about mechanical repair and carpentry from working on my own vehicles and home, which most people under 30 can’t afford to begin with.

>>
>>539222469

Modern appliances and vehicles have been made overly complicated so the manufacturers can continuously justify having their shit serviced by a TRUE CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN(tm), which means doing any tinkering on one's own will void warranties and incurs higher costs overall. It's enshittification on a global scale.

Also, it only ever takes three things to get something done: skill, will, and time. A lot of us usually only have two of those

Don't forget to change your timing belt and water pump every 75k. Also, you'll have to do cv axles one day. And oil changes. And brake pads. And windshield wipers. And tires. Probably some shocks and control arms or something. That's about it though. Mid 90s Japanese cars are pretty awesome.

I am full time employed, I can't commit only my evenings to fixing major things nor rent a vehicle for week+ or hitch rides from coworkers for that time

change a radiator, a blinker, a brake light, a starter, an alternator, brakes, rotors, all the easy jobs that can be done in an hour or less, no problem

if its something that's gonna take me multiple days I'll just pay a mechanic who does it full time for a living

that said, i am getting so fucking sick and tired of fixing my washing machine (and dryer). shit has broken 10 times in the past year, it's like the ship of theseus at this point. i even replaced a relay on the control board and completely botched it because i suck at soldering (but got it working in the end anyway). unironically thinking of starting at side hustle where i buy broken appliances and repair em at this point

I think its more that young men can't afford homes with garages.
For years when I was renting I just took my car to the mechanic for oil changes because I didn't want to do it in the apartment complex parking lot.
Now that I have a garage I do almost all my own maintenance at home.
