>>539251007Russian imperialism simply. Russia can't compete economically with EU over Ukraine so they use force instead. Because Ukraine didn't have a proper security guarantee they were open for a Russian invasion. Putin probably has a plan where Russia is better off long term if they secure Ukraine now as shit isn't sorted out. If you don't believe me just google when Putin compared himself to Peter the Great who took band some lands from the Swedes. If you think it's bad now, imagine if Russia doesn't actually secure Ukraine which is why they are so all in. It's why they can lose more troops than USA have done in like all wars combined since WW2 and still struggle forward. Putin has to own this and produce some win. Crimea felt great to him but he has to keep the foot in the door and now also provide some win on the escalation.Overall, I'm not a believer in the "2 days special operation" that many western analysts and Russian talking heads yapped about but I do think he expected the escalation to produce much better results especially since 2014 went so smoothly.
>>539253066Also, to add. Ukraine has long been under Russian empires and have been Russified in many different ways and has tons of ethnic Russians which Moscow claim ownership of and Ukraine cause turmoil when they want to make the Ukraine language and identity central. Both Crimea and Donbas voted to be Ukraine and not part of Russia (54% ish Crimea but 84% ish Donbas) but they did so thinking Ukraine would remain close friends with Russia because that's how they've lived before. Like it was this very naive optimism it wouldn't be a problem. So for Russia these claims + ethnic support is massive but something that 100% can crater with time and Ukrainian identity is something that might blossom more outside the yoke of big brother which is why Yanukovych was pressed to go against his campaign policy and sign a customs union with Russia that would eliminate their EU economic integration and why he tried to put down the protests violently. When that failed Russia went to next phase and immediately invaded so Ukraine couldn't run away and we get to where we are now.
