Anyone else get sentimental for old American cities? I feel like life was much more interesting then. Instead we are all packed away in suburban homes or apartments going to the same chain stores and restaurants without talking to each other.

that's alienation, it's happening all over the world, mom-and-pop stores disappearing, being replaced by 7-eleven

Yeah it's pretty sad. We are all just cogs in the machine now.

I don't know. In a way yes, it seems sad. But it's like when you compare the capitalist Western Bloc vs the communist Eastern Bloc, the West had more choices and variety perhaps, the East was more all the same. The West is becoming more like that now. But look at monks, they all dress the same way. When life in the earthly domain is simpler the higher domains of the mind have more space to move around in perhaps. Life on the outside gets grayer and more just all the same, but on the inside maybe there's more opportunity to engage with ideas etc.

You'd lose your sentimentality real quick.

I would rather have just one car, and one brand of shoes etc. I'm fed up with all the worrying about retirement savings, what car to buy etc etc. In the East life was simpler. Instead of worrying about mundane shit like that all the time they had time to enjoy the birds or read a poem. It's good when the world gets simpler. We don't need 6,000 different toasters to choose from on amazon, or 300 different sneakers in the shoe store. That's just a headache. 20 years ago every electronic device had its own cable, its own charger and its own plug. It was insane, you had a box with 30 different plugs. Now it's all one USB plug for everything.
