Growing up I saw way more paper wasps than anything. Some yellow jackets and some carpenter bees. Rarely proper honey bees unless it was from a bee keepers hives.

In my backyard I regularly see bees, but their nests must be well hidden. I see tons of wasp nests and wasps though. I've seen wasp nests in trees, we had one across the street from us 3 years ago. Maybe 15 years ago I was walking in the woods with my friend and we stepped on a huge wasp hive in the ground hidden in the brush and just got rekt lol.
