Basically every other European nation wanted to curb stomp France for daring to chop off the heads of royal assholes. France won all of these wars but at huge cost. Then it got worse. Along came Napoleon, so France had swapped one pack of assholes for another asshole. The Napoleonic wars lasted from 1805 to 1815 and absolutely decimated French manpower. So we have now had one long series of wars which lasted nearly a quarter of a century and resulted in close to 20% of French manpower being wiped out. Even 20% does not sound too bad until you realize it was the French men of military age, the very best men, the workers, the providers, the husbands and would-be-husbands, the back bone of the nation. So France went into demographic decline and stagnation. Basically they just couldn't breed fast enough to replace the losses they has sustained.Then came the kicks to the balls. The Franco- Prussian war in 1870. That was pretty quick admittedly and didn't take too much of a toll, more like a bitch slap when you are already punch drunk. All the same nearly half a million French civilians lost their lives.But just 40 years later came WW1. That was the final blow. The French losses were astronomical. "France suffered an estimated 1.35 million to 1.4 million military deaths during World War I. Out of approximately 8.4 million men mobilized, these devastating losses meant that roughly 73% of France's deployed military became casualties, including around 4.2 million wounded."Out of a total population of just 40 million at the time.Their best men. Their brightest and most able. The backbone of France. That's not even counting the civilian casualties of approximately half a million That was effectively the end of France. WW2 was just the pillow over the face. In summary they were bled to death by a series of savage wars.
