I asked a United States american if he could reccomend me some villages to visit in the US, I said "a small town, a village, as you prefer to call them", then he got really mad and said they don't call their small towns "villages" because that's derogatory and only used outside of the USA.
We live in towns and cities here. Not villages, hamlets, bergs or whatever other terms you use.

Also, it's totally arbitrary: if it has "a lot of people" it's a city, if it doesn't, it's a town, and what constitutes "a lot" depends who you're asking as well as how dense the population is.For instance: the town I live in (see? Town) has 40k people. That seems like enough to be a city, but it doesn't "feel" like a city because it's very spread out. Meanwhile, there is another place nearby that has less population but it's more dense, that's a city. I grew up in a town that had less than 5,000 people, technically it was a village, but everyone calls it a town. I've been to a place called Center, South Dakota. Population: 62.
