They didn't start talking about a holocaust until the late 60s:

The Holocaust wasn't a household term until the 1960s. Before then, WWII was framed as an anti-Nazi war, not specifically about Jewish persecution. The Nuremberg Trials (1945-1946) focused on German aggression, not genocide. The New York Times mentioned Auschwitz only six times between 1942 and 1945-none highlighted mass Jewish killings. The word "Holocaust" itself wasn't widely used until after Hannah Arendt's 1963 book Eichmann in Jerusalem and especially after the 1967 Six-Day War, when Israel needed international sympathy to legitimize its expansionist policies. This narrative shift coincided with Zionism's rise in America-turning what was initially reported as Nazi brutality into a singular Jewish tragedy to galvanize support for Israel and cement victimhood status.

>until the 60s
Most of the holocaust mythologizing and storytelling, messaging in western mass media and publishing started after the 1961 Eichmann trial. That is the point at which a concerted effort to push and 'notice' it in books, films, news publications and magazines, interviews etc. began.
Prior to that during the 1946-1960 period, especially in the United States the Nuremberg trials and discussion of what happened to the Jews of Europe had been left in the 1940s as a raft of new social and governmental topics had arisen in the 1950s, Korean War, recession, fight against communism, disenchanted / dysfunctional suburban-urban youth (latter half of '50s). The only people focused on it up to 1961 in Europe and America were academics who wrote books, journal articles, discussed it at conferences etc. but that did not spill over into LIFE Magazine, politics or popular NPC discourse at all. Most Americans were ready to forget WWII altogether during the 50s.
