Because racism is largely recreational and self-affirming without the need for unnecessary high stakes purity testing out in the wild, people are intrinsically empathetic creatures and while sure you could argue not wanting to get assaulted is a significant factor in not making a big show of your supposed tribal loyalties I think a bigger factor is just not wanting to hurt somebody else's feelings when you could simply keep your vitriol contained to online forums where it's pretty much an unspoken rule that casual racism is fair play
