I have a sony fald tv in my living room who used pretty much blind me at night because it was so bright to the point that i turned it down a lot. After a few updates even at full brightness the tv is dark as fuck. Tv brands do this for several reasons, at launch of a new model the reviewers give a higher score for higher brightness, and then after some time scale the brightness down a lot so people buy new tv's. There are stories out there of people rolling back the software on the tv's they own and gaining back a shitload of peak brightness.
