China banned touch screen panels in cars that substituted buttons.

They mandated there has to be at least 19 physical buttons and dials in the car to control the features such as air conditioning, turn signals, hazard lights, etc.

This was in response that having a touch screen to control all these features is more dangerous and less reliable.

Everything that can possibly fail (which is everything) is a potential "point of failiure".
The question is how badly do things go if it fail in any given way (eg. does the engine fail to start or does it start suddenly accelerating into a brick wall at full acceleration), how likely is it to fail and how many points of failiure do you have.

A DVD reader , a turn signal and an engine are all "points of failiure" (more specifically these mechanisms have points of failiure but you get the idea).

Isn't it fantastic we had to go through 10 years of people figuring out the bleeding obvious? In the same society that's trumpeted out looking at your phone = running over a child. That started with the Nokia phone era btw not even smartphones.
This is why the idea that we're overregulated is fucking nonsense. They always let corpos do whatever the fuck they want and play Johnny come lately decades after the fact. Just look at the AI shit now, where they started with the biggest copyright infringement case in all of history and nobody did jack shit. Self driving cars is another one. We just have to let them kill people and then claim no responsibility before figuring out it's a bad idea you see.

No, it was not. It was the financial aspect that made car companies remove those parts. They are reducing the $5 extra cost to make those parts and install those parts. Car makers are notorious for saving every penny and dollar as it accumulates to millions over the lifespan of the product.

>>539370813

All car makers use the same or similar suppliers for those types of parts. The issue isn't the point of failure. The issue is that car makers just want to save pennies and dollars which add up to millions over the course of the product lifespan.

My ideal vehicle would probably have a screen of some sort whether touchscreen or not wouldn't matter.

You could take a screen and use it to retrofit a radio and backup cam and then you could wire up a basic sensor suit (not a ECU, just a passive sensor suite) and OBDii port and hardwire it directly to the touchscreen for live diagnostics. You could probably use a Holley Sniper or something and just use it passively for the diagnostics and codes. It's a really elegant solution to multiple things.

Wut?

Our government bans them from being sold here you worthless retard.

Norway expanded their laws against using phones in cars to using the touchpad infotainment shit. Which makes total sense. But it is also hilarious. The fine for changing the volume or changing the temperature while driving is about €1100. If you own a car produced between say 2017 and 2026, and you want to change the radio station, you stop, park, change station and drive away.

>>539377666
Here ya go, only $30k.

Luxury German brands implemented increasingly large screens before Tesla even existed, but the screens were supplementary. All the physical buttons were still there. Tesla turned this into a cost-saving measure, called it 'minimalism' removed all physical buttons to save a ton of money on parts and time, no buttons, no dials, no wiring, just one ipad. Then other manufacturers said
>Woah you can cut cost and charge more??? We are soooo doing that too
And soon every car became an ipad with wheels for €75.000
>>
>>539377239
you're out of your fucking mind. the knobs and electronic parts for traditional car controls can't possibly cost more than a dollar or two. you can't even wash the nigger blood off the conflict coltan used to make touch screens for that much.

LABOR you fucking retard
and manufacturing complexity

The good part is that crooks get what they deserve sooner or later in China. Here in the US we give a slap on the wrist to corporations who kill people, poison the earth, or do worse. It's a Jew's paradise because any issue can be solved with just paying a fine. Not saying China is perfect by any stretch at all but they at least punish criminals sufficiently.
>>
>>539378364
>but the screens were supplementary
Off the top of my head the mid late 2000s mercs had their entire nav and a/v stack integrated into a resistive touchscreen. Same with Lexus in the same time period. I think they still had physical hvac controls but everybody just left that shit in auto 100% of the time anyway so I don't really count any of that. All the things you were likely to interact with during a drive other than the wheel, indicators, gear selector and pedals were run through a resistive touchscreen.

>oh no, people get to have JOBS, the HORROR
>corporations don't make as much money because they have to build a better product instead of scamming everyone

found the thread jew everyone
>>
>>539378631
a single minimum wage worker can run a machine that can spit out thousands of plastic knobs per minute. tell me what is more complex to manufacture, a fucking switch made out of a spring and two metal contacts, or a touch screen that requires capacitive glass and multiple integrated circuits?
>>
>>539378690
Hey dumbass, no one here is saying screens are good or better than tactile feedback knobs and buttons, they're explaining why screens are cheaper, which is objectively true. You're tilting at windmills.
>>
>>539368579
I would do this, ban all but the most minimal computers in a car's systems, and require they be made in such a way that the average man can work on his car himself.
>>
>>539379109
Impossible, do you want all those poor shareholders to go homeless? Don't be greedy.
>>
>scroll through whole thread
>no videos of chinks running poles into electric cables and exploding
pol has lost a step.
>>
>>539379109
You know that is not going to happen. A self sufficient man? they don't want that.
>>
>>539379033
You could choose to look and see what car manufacturers say and report about the cost of screens vs knobs and your find that knobs are 2x more expensive than screens, but you don't. Weird.
>>
>>539377617
China isn't perfect, but you can see it's a country ruled by patriots instead of opportunists with things like the way they cracked down on the gutter oil industry when it came to light.

>Other vehicles used touchscreens before Tesla
I first noticed a car with the buttons and dials disappeared when I peered into a Tesla in 2017.

I don't get why this board wants me to hate china so much.

I drive a 2013 toyota avalon, it has a big ass touch screen. I hate it, I hate the whole car, tons of cheap shiny reflective crap that always blinds me, it's super long and has a shit turning angle so it's super difficult to park. Shit has been shit for a while now.

Miggers will argue out of misplaced pride lmao

He is a retard who has zero concept of assembly logistics and the associated costs. He thinks that jellybean parts come off the production line somewhere and just magically end up in a hvac or headunit stack as one modular chunk that an employee on the assembly line just pops in like a cassette into a tapedeck. Ironically if he did understand these things he'd realize that the move to full touchonly center stacks came about because they actually can be assembled the way he thinks tactile interfaces are put in.

Based and what we need to do pilled. Also, they need to ban forcing you to download an app on your phone instead of using your mobile browser, not providing paper alternatives to QR codes, and making you use an app to get discounts/coupons
>>
>>539377708
To be clear I hate the tech and I especially hate the way it is used by manufacturers.

The basic rule is if the increased performance can be achieved with more displacement (within a reasonable size/weight), then displacement always wins. Minimize points of failure and complexity.

Optimally you would have a passive sensor suite on a carb'd engine. Sensors routed to a black box (no ecu) and hardwired to a screen with live data.

Essentials like fuel, speedo, tach, and oil temp would be run to a separate guage cluster.

Based and common sense.

>china just steals them
China improved it
>>
>>539380192
There hasn't been a single improvement in the automobile for over 30 years now. That goes for the US, China, European manufacturers etc.

They are more fuel efficient though.

Screens are smudgy pieces of shit and I hate new cars with all their spy gadgets and gay ass features tied into cloud everything. Oh let me guess, I need to pay an extra $50 a month for my heated seats to work? Or an extra $80/month to unlock horsepower on the factory-crippled engine? On top of being stranded due to some jeeted software update that bricked the car? FUCK YOU.
FUCK YOUR $80,000 PIECE OF UNRELIABLE UGLY SPYWARE-RIDDLED BUTTONLESS SHIT.
If my car doesn't look like this then I'm not interested.
