The European powers carved the world up due to relative weakness to one another. Germany was by far the strongest great power and had the smallest Empire. The US following WW2 was undispuited hegemon in industry and did not need an empire to corner markets, instead the empire was necessary to prevent the spread of socialism which otherwise would have dominated most of the world. In the modern day with the industrial decline and trade deficit of the US the empire is now much more old fashioned and exists to keep the US competitive by excluding rivals, hence why they put up so many tarrifs on China.
