A report by Germany's public broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) has revealed that an Iraqi national working at the immigration office in Darmstadt is making decisions on the residence status of other foreign nationals despite not being a German citizen and holding only a temporary residence permit himself.The employee, identified only as Mr. Abduljabbar, arrived in Germany from Iraq at the end of 2015 and says he waited more than six years for a decision on his own asylum application. He has worked at the Darmstadt immigration office for the past five years while remaining subject to another immigration authority for his own residency matters.One of his responsibilities is deciding whether foreign nationals may remain in Germany and for how long. The programme shows him handling the case of a rejected asylum seeker who became liable for deportation in April 2025 but was granted a temporary residence permit after presenting an apprenticeship contract and beginning vocational training.Abduljabbar, who studied English literature in Iraq before completing vocational training in Germany, said his own experience with the immigration system helps him understand applicants but stressed that he must follow German law. He also said he hopes to become a German citizen once he meets the legal requirements.
