They have mountains of money, they have a space program, they are active in booming tech industries, they have one of the largest entertainment industries in the world, they have a rich 3000+ year culture, they are pretty racially and culturally homogeneous, they have a history of the arts, music and architecture, they have large population centers and resources. So what happened? Is it just a very corrupt government or are they in debt or lacking in things like tourism?
