Candidates aren’t chosen by the population, they’re selected by committees and political insiders. Special interests groups and powerful lobyists all play a role as well. Trump didn’t decide to just run, he had political backing. All of those people have been involved in politics for a very long time. The longer someone is involved, the more powerful they are (generally). So older people are often in the highest positions of power. It shifted beyond the 50’s and 60’s demographic and into the truly geriatric 70’s and 80’s with the Boomers, simply because they were the largest demographic and were able to hold on to political power though numbers alone. Things will change VERY quickly as the Boomers retire from politics (or die). The following generations don’t have nearly as much political capital due to being fragmented culturally and ideologically. The Boomers were much more monolithic. With their passing comes a power vacuum that everyone will try to fill.
