JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) announced that it recovered approximately 50 tons of rare earth element-rich mud in a test conducted off the coast of Minamitorishima, with medium and heavy rare earth elements accounting for 54% of the total. The mud contains many important elements such as yttrium and neodymium, and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized this as an achievement in reducing dependence on China. While the environmental impact was low and no harmful substances were detected, challenges remain regarding refining costs and the deep-sea ecosystem before commercialization. Full-scale testing is scheduled to begin in February 2027, and evaluation of industrialization will proceed.
