To this day this is used as tongue in cheek. Even in Polish version of movie Madagascar, King Julien speaks with eastern (Ruthenian) accent.

No one knew that Stalin was going to cooperate with Hitler in the attack.Furthermore, the guarantee of independence from England and France was only a guarantee against Germany. It specifically did not apply to Russian aggression. And further still - while England and France would not have been able to guarantee Poland's independence - they WOULD have been able to defeat Germany in the long run IF STALIN WAS NOT INITIALLY ON GERMANY'S SIDE.We're all armchair generals in hindsight.
