Budapest isn’t a Hungarian city anymore. The composition of its population has changed dramatically in recent years. When you walk through downtown, every other person is Arab or Indian, and there are a lot of Black people. There are streets and neighborhoods where you hardly ever hear a word of Hungarian. I walk into a fast-food restaurant and am served by an African guy who doesn’t speak Hungarian. I walk home, and every two seconds, South Asian delivery guys rush past me. My neighborhood has been flooded with all kinds of people of color who have taken over the public spaces, the benches, the streets, the fountains, and are bathing there. When I was a child, Budapest was run-down and poor, but safe and Hungarian. There were one or two streets where our Roma community lived, but for the most part, if you avoided those, you felt perfectly safe and among your own people.Not anymore. It's over.
